Remove or hide category archive titles wordpress

How to Remove Category Archive Titles from a WordPress Website

A common practice in WordPress is to link a navigation or menu to a WordPress category archive.

The problem is that, by default, when you display a category archive, the category archive title is displayed and it looks like:

Category Archive: “Name of Category”

This is typically hideous and makes a website look less appealing. Want to hide the category archive title from a website? Want to remove the category archive title altogether? Read on to learn about Category Archive Titles and how to remove or hide them.

Why Use Category Archive Titles?

Category Archive titles are displayed by default for SEO purposes and also to let the reader know exactly what they are viewing.

If I accidentally click on a link to go to the animal pictures category from a post about cute kittens, I might be left wondering where I am if not for that category title.

For SEO purposes, the H1 tag on the page displaying your category is indexed by Google so that looking for “Animal Pictures” — to use the above example — might lead to your category archive page.

Hide Category Archive Title using PHP

What if you want to display specific content on a category archive page or remove the title altogether using another WordPress theme? There is a solution, albeit a more code-oriented one.

You will want to remove or comment out the archive title ‘archive-title’ which will most likely be found in the loop-archive.php section or category.php section, depending on how the theme was developed.

Once you have a created a child theme (perhaps even using our one-click child themes), you can import new PHP files into your FTP that are specific to the category you want to edit. These individual elements are clumped into the category.php file but be separately edited within the WordPress PHP editor or on your editor of choice.

You can add HTML content just before the category roll of content is displayed, like titles, images, or anything for that matter!
